Dr Angharad Vaughan

Dr Angharad Vaughan (DPsych) is a Counselling Psychologist at Harrison Psychology Group, London

I am an HCPC Counselling Psychologist currently working in the third sector and private practice. I trained at the University of Surrey and have previously worked in the NHS.

I believe psychotherapy is a unique way of making sense of our experiences and finding meaning in our distress. It is not always about eliminating suffering but allowing oneself the opportunity to understand and relate to it differently.

My approach to therapy is relational and integrative. I draw upon three modalities - existential, psychodynamic and third wave cognitive approaches. I work in a flexible manner to reflect your needs. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is key to change, which means that our relationship is important and needs to be collaborative and trusting. I always aim to provide a safe space, which is non-judgemental, compassionate, empathic and inclusive. I adopt a holistic approach, paying attention to the physical, psychological, spiritual and social aspects of your experience. As embodied beings, we will also pay attention to your embodied experiences. We will examine your past, your present concerns and hopes for the future as well as delve into your emotional experiences and relationship patterns.

In all of my therapeutic work, I take a trauma informed approach. Everyone will experience trauma throughout their lives. Whilst it can be a one-off debilitating event, other trauma can be a series of smaller, more prolonged, or even invisible experiences. Making sense of our experiences through therapy, can help us face up to our existence, to find more meaning and live an authentic life - one which fulfils our true purpose. In that sense, our work together can be an opportunity to explore, process, understand and make sense of your lived experiences, as a way of resolving any emotional and psychological difficulties.

I have expertise working with a wide range of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems, physical and sexual health issues, shame, stress, burnout. I am passionate about working with LGBTQI+ communities and have specialist experience of working with gender, sexuality and relationship diversity. I always pay attention to our differences, such as cultural background, sexual and gender identity, disability - and how these and other intersecting identities influence our lived experience, meaning-making and wellbeing.
