Dr Nicolas Burden

Dr Nicolas Burden, DClinPsy, MA, BA | Clinical Psychologist & Clinical Associate

I’m a Clinical Psychologist with 15 years experience working therapeutically with people. In clinical work, I maintain an open-minded, warm and non-judgmental approach to the struggles that people bring to their therapy. I aim to make my clients feel safe and work hard to establish a strong therapeutic relationship, knowing that this is crucial in supporting people to make important changes.

In therapy, I am active and engaged, reflective and flexible. I ask questions, I give theory, and I explain the different ways to make sense of a given problem as well as the different steps needed to make change. I value working collaboratively with my clients and urge them to take an active role along with me in their therapy. I also take an integrative approach, which means I use different therapeutic techniques from different therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Systemic Family Therapy.

Overall, I aim to help you explore your experiences and draw connections between how you are feeling, what you are doing and what is happening in your life. We will also explore the role of what has happened in your past and how the world has treated you. In being able to understand yourself from these multiple perspectives, I aim to help you create more peace of mind and build the resolve needed to make healthier choices for yourself.

In private practice I work with adults and couples. I work with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, panic, behavioural problems, relationship strain, family strain, dysmorphia, stress, burnout, trauma, low self-esteem, obsessive compulsivity and chronic health conditions. I also have expertise in working with gender, sexuality and relationship diversity and have worked for many years with the LGBTQ+ communities.

I am particularly interested in exploring diversity and intersectionality. We must acknowledge the constraints and prejudices of society today and explore how 'being different' can affect a person's health. At the same time, it is crucial to our self-development and peace of mind to celebrate and accept our difference, whether that is based on race, sexuality, gender, ethnicity, neurodiversity, religion or class.

I trained with the Faculty of Health & Medicine at Lancaster University, UK, where I achieved a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I have extensive experience working in both private and the NHS, where I am considered as Highly Specialist. I am additionally HCPC registered and chartered with the BPS.
